Taming Lower Kern

Kern, California

The temperature was 106 degrees when we arrived at the campsite. The location was large enough for us to spread our tents out in a large circle around the center of camp, and we had private access to the river at a beautiful swimming hole. Lots for the kids and dads to explore. We went to sleep sweating, but everyone was excited for our adventure the next day.

In the morening we found out that a local fire had a part of the river closed for helicopters and we may not be able to raft. It seemed as if nothing was going right so far on this trip, but we eventually made the drive down to the river out and geared up. It was go time.

‍

Any thought of the heat, delays or possible rainstorm vanished once the TMs got on the rafts. Our crew braved Class 4 rapids and jumped from 20+ ft. cliffs into the Kern. We spent the entire day on the river and everyone had a blast swimming, rafting and getting drenched in the rain. The girls braved heat, fire, lightning and rapids and every one of them rose to the challenge. The dads were proud.

‍

We finished the night with tasty steak sandwiches and stories, games and music. Another wonderful experience we'll remember for the rest of our lives.

‍

The TMs are already looking for their next river to conquer!
